Gavin Rees lifts Prizefighter light-welterweight crown

Gavin Rees lifts Prizefighter light-welterweight crown

Calzaghe Promotions fighter and former WBU world champion Gavin Rees thrust himself back on to the boxing map by winning the eighth Prizefighter tournament at London's Olympia.

Rees showed his class as he stormed to victory against Colin Lynes and took the £32,000 top prize.

Speaking shortly after being crowned the new light-welterweight Prizefighter champion, Rees said: "It feels good. A lot of people said I wasn’t big enough to fight at over 10 stone, but I hopefully showed how good I was."

"I’ve only fought once in 18 months and it means everything for my career. I’ve always said I had a great chin and I am definitely proud of the achievement."

Joe Calzaghe also watched Rees from ringside and said afterwards: "I am proud of Gavin. He was fantastic, especially as he’s only boxed once in the last year and a half. He did really well in a fantastic competition and I want to see him back fighting at world title level in the New Year."
